There's a lot of vague advice around "getting started with AI".
In reality, most businesses don't need experimentation. They need clarity.
A proper AI assessment is not a brainstorming session or a list of tools.
It is a structured review of how the business operates, where data exists, and where bottlenecks occur.
That includes:
- understanding workflows
- identifying repetitive or manual processes
- reviewing data quality and availability
- assessing constraints (technical, commercial, regulatory)
From there, potential use cases can be evaluated properly.
Not all of them should proceed.
A good assessment will:
- prioritise use cases based on value and feasibility
- identify where AI should not be used
- outline realistic implementation effort
- define how success will be measured
Most importantly, it produces something tangible:
- a written report
- a clear roadmap
- decisions that can be acted on
AI does not need to start with a platform.
It needs to start with understanding.
